Our Artisans

LAMSA is handmade with love by Abeer, Bhathena, Bushra, Ghada, Hallume, Mai, Miriam, Mona, Noor, & Rihab

These women have all fled to Lebanon from Syria with their families for safety and a hope of a better future. Our community of artisans are rebuilding their lives, finding meaning and purpose in their craft work. Crochet is tedious and time consuming; it's an opportunity in their hectic lives to enjoy some quiet. This work is also deeply therapeutic, a distraction from the anxiety and stress of living in protracted displacement.

Crochet is a traditional Syrian craft, passed down through generations of women.Time for crochet and access to materials during war and displacement is difficult. Many young Syrian women have thus never had the opportunity to learn from their mothers, grandmothers and aunties. LAMSA is keeping traditional craft knowledge and appreciation alive, leveraging skills that were already present in the community.

All of our crochet is made in the artisans’ homes. We chose this style of working because it allows time to care for children and the home. It is also more relaxing.
